Degrees and Certifications:

Mrs. Joanne Prater

I teach 6th grade reading and language here at Vernon Intermediate. I am a 2003 graduate of Lamar County High School.

After graduation, I attended Bevill State Community College and graduated with an Associate’s Degree in Science. I then found my passion in being able to work with children and watching their minds grow. I earned my Bachelor’s Degree in Education at Mississippi University for Women in 2011. I began my teaching career at Pickens Academy teaching high school history. Finally in the fall of 2012, with many prayers, I was able to get a teaching job at Vernon Intermediate teaching 6th grade! After working for 3 years, I decided to go back to school and get my Master’s Degree in Elementary Education at The University of West Alabama. Finally after 3 years, I graduated! I love my students and feel that this is where I am meant to be!

My family is my backbone and means the world to me! I have been married for almost 12 years to Michael and together we have 2 children. Troy is 7 years old and is in 2nd grade at Vernon Elementary School. Troy enjoys learning and playing outside. He also loves to play baseball. Allie Jo is 4 years old and is excited to learn new things. She takes dance class and enjoys playing outside. Allie enjoys being a princess and competing in pageants. They keep us on our toes every day! We also enjoy watching and going to Alabama football games, making memories on family trips, and spending time with family and friends.
