Degrees and Certifications:

Mrs. Malin Freeman

I have been teaching for 15 years, 13 of those at South Lamar School. I have taught self-contained (all subjects) fifth-grade, Kindergarten, and third-grade in addition to her current position, which is an AMSTI and A+ certified science instructor for both fifth and sixth grades.

I grew up in Columbus, MS. After graduating from Caldwell High School, I moved to Starkville, MS, where I earned both a degree in Psychology, with a minor in Science, as well as a degree in Elementary Education. After working several years as a case manager in Choctaw County, MS, where I worked closely with both the mentally ill and developmentally delayed populations, I took off two years to be with my newborn daughter. I worked for two years at Sturgis Elementary in Sturgis, MS, teaching fifth-grade before moving to Lamar County and joining the Stallion faculty as a kindergarten teacher.

I am married to Gary Freeman, who also works for our district as the Welding Instructor at the Lamar County School of Technology in Vernon, AL. We live in Kennedy, AL with our children, Ashlynn McCain and Tucker. While Tucker is currently a student at South Lamar, his sister, Ashlynn, is pursuing a double-major degree at Mississippi State University at the Honors College, in Communications and Psychology.

I have a wide variety of interests and hobbies, including reading, science news, drawing, crafts, and music (which includes playing the clarinet). While I, like my fellow teachers, have a limited amount of time for these interests, I am passionate about my students and the staff at South Lamar, often referring to them as my family: “There is no other place I’d rather work, especially in such a challenging field. My students are ‘my kids’ and my co-workers are my family.”
